Haturday - Knit Hats

Donated Hats

Knit hats

I finally sat down and woven in ends on a whole slew of hats over the last couple weeks, pulling out many of the remaining hats from my last rounds of donations. cashmere knit hats

Simple cashmere hats made from recycled cashmere yarn left over from other projects. knit hats

Simple textured hats- the blue is in one of my favorite yarns, Shepherd’s Wool Worsted. It’s a beautifully soft yarn that really shows off texture and cables wonderfully. wrist warmers

Fringed wool scarf Midnightsky Fibers

A fringed wool scarf, made from fabric similar to lightweight dress pants. I made it extra wide, ala a blanket scarf. Green Handknit hats

Question: how many hats can you get out of a skein on Eco +? Answer: 6, if you use the last bit up with some other leftovers for stipes. (4-5 if I had done longer fold up brims)

PS- those brown hats below? Also Shepherd’s Wool Worsted.

Turkey Trip

Made from yarn from Turkey Trip Make in Turkey Midnightsky Fibres http://Midnightskyfibers.comWhen I went to Turkey I found a couple of yarn stores, so of course picked up a bit of yarn! Most of the yarn was acrylic or acrylic and wool blends and were made in Turkey.  I picked up some plain yarns and a few self striping fun skeins as well. A couple skeins of the yarn I picked up had metallic thread running through it and was quite fuzzy. I held these yarns together with leftover wool yarns from my stash to tone down the sparkle make thick warm hats.  Still looks a bit like a unicorn threw up on them, but hopefully in a fun and not overwhelming way.

Several of these hats are variations on the Elevation Hat.

Corrugated Dots

corrugated dots

Made from some self striping yarn I got on my trip to Turkey, this hat was a nice way to use up the yarn and stretch is as far as possible. The contrast with the solid black really helps the colors pop. I used 1 by 2 corrugated ribbing to keep a nice sleek look, then used a lice pattern for the colorwork on the body. The benefit of the lice pattern is that the dots are spaced far enough apart so that the hat still remains stretchy.

Cranberry

cranberry

Just a way to use up some nice warm wool leftovers. A simple knit beanie in wool yarns in wide varied stripes. I made this fairly close fitting, with a bit of a drawn in top for interest and a tiny ribbed hem to prevent curling.

Yoda

yoda crochet hat

Crocheting a yoda style hat while watch Star Trek is a bit mind bending!  I made a basic beanie, then made ears starting at the tip and increasing every row.  Next time I will go down a hook size to help the ears be more stiff so they stay up better, and if this was for a costume, would use wire in the ears.

The yarn is vintage wool that I thrifted, a basic worsted weight 100% wool. It is nice and warm for hats, but definetly not as soft as merino.

Crosses and Dots

crosses and dots

A hat to use up a small ball of some leftover cream yarn. A foldover hem for warmth, cross pattern to add some interest, and dots to stretch the cream yarn. I used a rapid decrease for the top for a nice slouchy look.

Winter Whites Hat

winter whites hat http://midnightskyfibers.com

I knit this in Sable, a merino/angora yarn blend I found at the thrift store (for $1! for 2 balls). I had a false start initially since the dyelots were different on a small bit of yarn wrapped around one of the balls, so I had to rip part of the hat back once I looked at it in brighter light.  There was enough yarn I could knit a deep 1×1 ribbed brim. To help the angora fluff up I ran the hat through a spin cycle and then a round of the dryer (on low heat, checking to be sure it wasn’t felting too much).

Silver Pipe

silver stripe

A quick hat to use up the last bit of some metallic silver yarn, this beanie is nice and warm while being fairly close fitting. I varied the length of the stripes to keep it interesting and stretch the yarn as far as possible.  The brim would have been better if I had switched to smaller needles or used fewer stitches for the ribbing.

Teal Panel hat

teal panels hat

A hat to use up some recycled shetland and teal yarns I had on hand. To make the “lice” pattern more interesting I knit solid stripes of teal to make the hat appear to have panels of pattern.

Super Big Little Pops

lice pattern colorwork hat

A super large hat in recycled shetland yarn and leftovers. The shetland is from a sweater I unravelled. The “lice” pattern I used here (with 1 or 2 rows between offset colorwork) is a great way to use up very small balls of leftovers. Lice also has the advantage of not pulling in as much as some other colorwork, making it easier to get away with not working the ribbing on smaller needles.

Woodcutters Hat

woodcutters hat

A simple colorwork hat to use up leftovers- I had several piles of reds, browns, and grays in wool and acrylic blends that were all worsted weight that I wanted to use up.  This hat is a great example of why you should use smaller needles to knit the ribbing…or increase a few stitches before starting the colorwork. I probably should have done both. Like most of my leftover hats, I let the amount of yarn I had of each color dictate what patterns I used and when I would switch colors.

Recycled Shetland

recycled shetland

A simple hat- I knit this using several strands of recycled shetland yarn from a sweater I unravelled. The dark grey yarn has a tiny bit of white throughout, and is quite warm (though not terribly soft). A great hat for working outdoors. I knit a deep K3, P2 ribbing with a st st body and quick decreases at the top.
