Haturday - Knit Hats

Oatmeal Hat

oatmeal knit beanie (2)

Knit in leftover yarn I made a simple cabled cardigan with, I knew I wanted to knit a simple beanie with this yarn to show off the beautifully crisp stitch definition this wool yarn has.

I believe this is Shepard’s Wool from Stonehedge, though I got it several years ago as “seconds” (had a few more knots than it would otherwise have), so it wasn’t labelled by the time I got around to working with it.

2×2 ribbing for the hem, just enough to keep the hat in place. Then around and around until a quick decrease for the top. This yarn is so lovely to work with that I barely got bored knitting in st st for the entire body.

Red Flag Hat

White with Red and Blue Thin Stripes

Inspired by the US flag, this vegan friendly acrylic hat has thin stripes of white, red, and blue. I knit a solid white 2×2 ribbed hem for contrast that draws in nicely. Fits beanie style, close to the head, with a bunched top.

Navy and Cream Hat

navy and white knit beanie

Navy and Cream
Thick stripes of dark navy and creamy white in vegan friendly acrylic yarn. This hat took maybe 3 hours to knit.  Ribbing helps drawn in the hem and the top decreases quickly for a relaxed bunched look.

Blue Sparkle Hat

Blue Sparkle Hat

I used metallic sewing thread held together with the yarn to form a quick stripe in an otherwise plain hat. This hat is knit from sock yarn I found at the thrift store. It is a lovely blue with a very slight tweed effect, and is very tightly plied. I held two strands of the yarn together to knit the hat so it would go a bit faster. It would’ve been better if I’d use smaller needles to knit the ribbing, as it is it poofs out a tiny bit. The top of the hat is formed by decreasing 4 stitches every round to form a swirl. Get more of a pointed swirl of fact by knitting a round between decrease rounds, less of a point by decreasing every round.

Cream Sailing Hat

cream sailing knit hat

Knit in acrylic so it is vegan friendly, I knit this simple beanie with just a few rounds of ribbing to help the hem draw in. I added navy stripes to keep the knitting more interesting, then knit around and around (and around, geez it gets boring in cream colored yarn!) until I was ready for a quick decrease.

Sailor Blues

Blue and Navy Vegan Hat

Vegan friendly acrylic yarn in dark navy and bright blue stripes. A 2×2 ribbed hem draws in and helps keep the hat in place on your head. The stripes go from narrow to wide from the hem to the top of the hat.

Retrolicious

retrolicious stripes (7)

Using up a plethora of tapestry wool I thrifted, I knit stripes of funky retro tapestry wools alternating with a plain brown wool. On the last round of most (but not all, to keep it entertaining!) I worked a purl round before switching to the brown to add some texture. The skeins of tapestry wool were short- just 8-10 yards each. I kept the bits leftover from the stripes and used them to make the pom pom.

Sailboat Cap

Handknit vegan beanie

Inspired by nautical striped shirts, this hat fits closely to the head- perfect for when you are on deck in the wind and salt spray! Knit in vegan friendly acrylic using 2×2 ribbing at the hem for lots of stretch. Alternating stripes of dark navy blue and creamy white, with a bright red pop.

Staggered Red Beanie

I knit this in vegan friendly acrylic in staggered ribbing. This is a close fitting beanie with a cinched top and thick ribbing on the hem to help keep it in place.

Stars and Stripes Hat

vegan handknit striped hat

Starts with thin ribbing to help pull in the hem, then switches to thick, chunky ribbing in alternating stripes of red, creamy white, and navy blue. This is a close fitting beanie, perfect alone or under hoods and helmets when you need a bit extra warmth. Knit in vegan friendly acrylic in heavy worsted weight yarn- and this is acrylic that is actually soft, not scratchy or prickly like some acrylic (especially vintage).

Navy and White Hat

handknit vegan navy blue hat

Inspired by nautical striped shirts, this hat fits closely to the head- perfect for when you are on deck in the wind and salt spray! Knit in vegan friendly acrylic using 2×2 ribbing for lots of stretch. The top of the beanie decreases quickly for a gathered look at the top. Dark navy blue with thin creamy white stripes part way up.

Bluest Skies

colorwork knit hat

Knit in some thrifted wool. I found some multicolored wool matching the main color- almost too close, since some of it matches exactly, making colorwork a bit tricky! The multicolored yarn worked best in the corrugated ribbing, which really shows off the colors without losing the pattern.

blue colorwork knit hat

I tried to keep the body simple to show off the colors without any complicated colorwork- just a bit of checkerboard which got a bit lost. As usual, I did a quick decrease over several rounds to finish off the hat. next time I would work the multicolor in garter ridges interspersed through the body of the hat to make it pop a bit more.
